Between 2012 and 2013, I was in a cosmopolitan city for internship that was required for the final semester of my Master's degree. I then hopped between places in the same city pursuing various certification courses, interviewing, etc. with an intent to get a good job and start a career there.

Well, it didn't happen. It was the recession period, and most freshers weren't getting placed at all. So, naturally, frustration creeped in, and I would involve myself in other day-to-day tasks such as early morning meditation, jogging, cooking, cleaning the condo where I lived, and yes, watching a long list of movies and series that I took from one of my flatmate's friends. He had a fascinating collection. Those worked as a good distraction.

The Vampire Diaries grabbed many people's attention and that made me curious. I had heard the reviews. But I wasn't a fan of The Twilight Saga, another film series revolving around vampires. Both are based on novels. People who read them wanted to watch. I don't read fictional stories. Hence, I had no clue what was coming next. It was a thrilling experience. Nearly all the main characters were good-looking and unpredictable.

The hypothetical idea of becoming a vampire was itself interesting to think about. The swiftness, psychic powers, ability to compel humans, and faster reflexes were all enough to keep a viewer engaged. They had love stories that appeared real.

Being a fan of the series in the past, and my years of ongoing interest in astrological signs, I recently thought about blending these two. There are 12 astrological sun signs in total, so I tried my best to link the fictional characters from the series displaying the most suitable traits I thought could match.

Beginning from the protagonists-trio – Elena, Stephen, and Demon, I have added other side characters that most of its fans are pretty much aware of. If you plan to watch it but haven't yet, there will be spoilers. If you are someone who already loved the series and who finds the idea of sun signs intriguing enough, this combination might give you a high. Just kidding! Let's begin.

The Vampire Diaries Character Sun Signs Explained

Elena – Taurus

ree

The series starts with her trying to make sense of life after a tragic car accident in which she survives, and both of her parents die. This makes her a strong and independent young teen lady. Her patience levels are extensively high and she doesn't lose temperament that easily. She has a caring and nurturing nature and that radiates well in situations when her younger brother (Jeremy) is on edge and feels completely lost, even though they don't have much age difference. She is honest and quite stubborn. When she sets her mind on something she almost always gets it by hook or crook. All these are Taurus traits.

Stefen – Pisces

ree

He is compassionate and empathetic. This made him regret every bit of killing he did as a vampire after turning the humanity switch off. Pisces are drawn to music, art, and writing. Stefen writes every piece of information of his own life, and thus, has several books about himself and people he dealt with. He is also emotional which is why tries his best to keep up with family and loved ones. But he has his share of mood swings such as sometimes patiently behaving like a good Salvator brother to going full-blown freakish ripper who doesn't have control as to when to stop drinking human blood once he starts consuming it.

He also has a hard time making decisions that was evident when he decides to serve Klaus for life as part of a deal, and then returns back to Elena AFTER he tells her that he would never return back. Gets furious when she develops feelings for Damon when clearly, he stops showing interest in her for several months despite her hard attempts to bring him back from Klaus' claws. Classic Pisces!

Damon – Leo

damon-salvatore

He likes to show off, gets attention from people because he wants to, and has dominating tendencies. He is also impulsive and makes reckless decisions. He has to be the Leo. The one who has an inflated ego and wouldn't back down how many times he is beaten to (almost) death. Just praise him and he is manipulated like a kitten, especially by his lady love Elena.

Bonnie – Sagittarius

ree

Since day one, Bonnie has been the "this is a sign" kind of person. She notices the repeated number patterns, the crows, psychic powers, etc. even before she discovers she is a witch. She has always had an undeniable gut feeling when something isn't right, and then it's proven with concrete evidence that she was right all along. She goes to any lengths for her loved ones with no expectation of favours in return. And she seldom thinks about the consequences. I cannot help but label her as a classic Sagittarius since she acquires nearly all the typical traits of one I could think about.

Caroline – Virgo

ree

She is the textbook description of a Virgo. A beautiful blonde who is obsessed with perfection in everything she gets involved in, whether school events, being a head cheerleader, fashion, and later even journalism and motherhood. She hates mess, even if that involves blood after transitioning into a vampire. She is also perfect from head to toe, tidy, truthful, and "the good vampire" to humans.

Jeremy – Cancer

ree

He is moody, emotional, and sensitive to the point that he starts doing drugs after his parents' sudden death followed by bad influence. His creative and artistic side is well seen later when he begins taking an interest in the history of the town where he lived about vampires, generates in art form through sketches, and writes a research paper to score marks he was lacking due to lack of attendance in the past. He is also family-oriented, and his priorities and loyalty run deep for his family members to the point of ignoring his studies. No wonder he seems to be a Cancer.

Katherine – Gemini

How to describe multiple personalities in this one woman? It is difficult to put her into a definite box or category. She successfully convinces men that she loves them and they love her in return only to be betrayed because she has a higher agenda. She never gets swayed by other men's charm because she is usually detached, analytical, and she needs to be the one who controls the narrative and influence for her own survival. Geminis are excellent con artists. Katherine fools people by impersonating Elena, since she resembles her, multiple times in the series.

ree

Her unpredictability keeps everyone hooked and her real objective is never remotely caught. She swears that she loves Stefan and then plays with Damon in parallel, then she exits in thin air only to jump onto another prey to start over a new life for a while. She keeps an eye on important people to keep an upper hand. Always ten steps ahead of everyone and survives for 500 years running from even ruthless originals like Klaus.

Klaus – Scorpio

ree

Over a thousand years old and yet holds grudges. Doesn't trust a single soul, whether an acquaintance or family and therefore, does not involve other people in his business unless it is serving him something. Gets a good idea of what is in people's minds and strategizes accordingly. Has an excellent investigative edge, and therefore, most people's agenda and whereabouts would be known by him in advance.

Conversely, he wouldn't let his own rivalries and serious enemies know about his shadows. Never let others know what truly is in his mind. Extremely emotional and wouldn't miss a chance to even score, and does not forgive anybody. Except a few, he has possibly all the Scorpio traits I could think of.

Rebecca – Aries

ree

That one and only original sister among the rest four brothers, an emotional fool who would go to any lengths for love and then get betrayed over and over again, and then back to square one. Once she acts on her impulses, her anger is settled. Then there are instances of her anger outbursts unless she gets an outlet through actions like burning trees. She has mind-blowing confidence in all areas of her life. She can't hide her feelings and wears her mood on her sleeves. Rebecca is without any doubt an Aries.

Elijah – Libra

ree

He is diplomatic and believes in fairness. This is why there are instances of him making deals between rivalries to maintain peace. He is also indecisive at times like during the time of hybrid-making ritual, he was on the edge of killing Klaus (who initiated the ritual) as he promised, then suddenly backs off when the moment arrives. He is also loyal to his family of origin, and romantic to his partner whoever he dates. Elijah is a Libra.

Hayley – Aquarius

ree

This air sign hops from one city to another, and continues to explore places and people with curious eyes. The reason is to find her biological parents and she keeps meeting plenty of people in her journey. She is fairly detached from most people except a handful few. Then pledges her loyalty to one family since she somehow gets involved with them out of situation.

Alaric - Capricorn

ree

His goal-driven nature makes him highly focused on finding out what happened to his wife who went missing some years ago. He is also a family-driven man who wants to marry a suitable woman to start a normal life with. Although he is unlucky in the department of being forever with his lady love but he does become a father of twin girls who he raises far, far away from threat.

He is also reserved in nature and loves reading historical books so much so that he dedicates his life to reading, and he consumes almost every historical piece present in the library. His dependable nature proves how he seriously trains Elena to fight back in any event of threat by vampires or other enemies.

My take on The Vampire Diaries - Before and After

I watched the show twice. For the first time as I mentioned during my job search, I was in my mid-twenties. Another time when I was in my mid-thirties when I was in the first trimester of pregnancy and had to lie down in bed due to nausea. My perspective entirely shifted when I rewatched it. Rewatching it years later, I couldn't help but reflect on the deeper questions the show stirred in me. What a truckload of sentimental nonsense was that!

I think their target audience was mainly teenage girls and young women who were in their early twenties (guilty!). The series contained all those stories that most women love to read even in novels. The dialogues, and slowness leading to finally getting two people together gave them a rush of hormones.

But one thing I found off-putting was that they convince their audience that two people are madly and deeply in love so much so that they will never leave each other's side. Then something happens that sounds logically lame so they split back to being friends. They keep on having serious affairs with many other people and each time their audience somehow understands why they are doing things they are doing. The character Caroline, for instance.

I could see through the toxicity in relationships - How Damon and Elena could never have worked in real life, How Klaus would have actually been cut off from his siblings since he was too intense to handle and his paranoia would run deep enough to keep everyone on edge.

Most of the vampires were over a century old and instead of growing more mature over time, they barely learned how to control their impulses. Each character had a background story of why they turned out to be evil. This storyline kept the viewers, including myself, hooked, and sympathised with their stance.

Later, it made me think - Are we supposed to become the villain if our past was ruined beyond measure? Can we accept that even though it was not in our control how fate had given us certain situations, we can still control what kind of person we become? Quite a lot of people remain in the victim mode justifying their present actions because they were humiliated and abused.

Hypothetically speaking, if multiple children were raised in the same dysfunctional home environment, treated nearly the same, shared the same kind of trauma, they will still become different personalities. It's the mix of genetics, how our brain stores data and processes it for later use, the release of certain kinds of hormones, and everything in between.

I would certainly recommend you to rewatch some of your favourite movies and television series with a gap of some years. You might be surprised by your own contradictory viewpoints regarding certain fictional characters if you are naturally analytical.

Even though the idea of becoming an immortal, powerful non-human was exciting in the past, I now personally believe that living forever is actually a curse. We have unnecessarily villainised death. It's the ultimate peace that life cannot bring.

Back to the series, overall, I think The Vampire Diaries became popular exactly when it was meant to. I am not sure whether the current generation will resonate with it as much. Even I wouldn't watch something like this another time. As for the sun sign guesses I've shared, if you think that some of my predictions are partially or completely off, feel free to let me know in the comments. I'm always open to constructive criticism and happy to reflect further.

Who is your favourite The Vampire Diaries character though? I was all head over heels for Damon (apologies to team Stefen!). I think this one had the most number of female fans. In real life, I would have avoided him though. Also, many girls (and guys who watched it) would agree that Klaus' accent was so soothing to hear, and hence he has his own good number of male and female fanbase.
